10 Minutes with Boaz Meron - Menswear Ambassador, Olive Farmer, Regional Entrepreneur and All Round Nice Guy!

The release of Goondiwindi Cotton's NEW Merino Wool Knitwear and Rugby collection for men called for a fresh face this Winter. This season, we sit down with Boaz Meron to learn more about his exciting venture with MacIntyre Brooke Olive Oil ahead of this year's Discover Farming Event in Goondiwindi.

Boaz, tell us a bit about yourself, your story and how did you end up growing olives?
I grew up here locally in the Goondiwindi region. I went to school at the local primary and high school. After school, I did an electrical trade through the military which took me on a tour of duty over to the Middle East. Later on, I worked on yachts in the Mediterranean.

When I arrived home my dad, Yigal had bought a farm which happen to have an established olive grove on it which hadn't been operational for a while. He did not intend to be an olive farmer! Through an intense first year though, Dad, Yoni & I, harvested, processed and established our olive oil brand - MacIntyre Brooke Olive Oil. MacIntyre Brook is a beautiful property located at Inglewood. How long has the olive grove been there for and what types of olives do you grow? Is the olive oil processed locally or do you outsource this?

MacIntyre Brooke has established olive tree's between 15 and 20 years old.  We have four main varieties here which include Picual, Manzanillo, Arbequina and Coratina. There is a couple others here but we are focusing on these particular ones.

This season we have started processing our olives on farm with the inclusion of a processing press we have built here on the grove.

Macintyre Brook Extra Virgin Olive Oil has a distinctive taste and approach to farming olives. Can you tell us more about holistic farming and the benefits for your health….
We can put our flavour down to the farming methods we use that are very similar to an organic operation, with natural manures used from the cattle that live in the grove, along with the right irrigation and pruning.

There is a long list of health benefits that go with using olive oil in your cooking, Extra Virgin Olive Oil is high in monounsaturated fat, which lowers the risk of heart disease, it also control blood glucose levels and blood pressure. It's really a good idea to add more into your diet.As a marketeer and foodie, I love the branding and quality of your product. Where are you stocked today and how would you like to see the business evolve over the next 10 years.
We are still learning a lot about the  olive oil game. It's a very interesting crop to have on farm and in the market. I would like to see yields increase in our farm operation with the implementation of water saving techniques through irrigation. As well, I'd like to broaden education about the nutritional benefits and multiple uses of olive oil.

What are 3 pieces of advice you’d give to young farmers and entrepreneurs looking to diversify on their property...
Ask a lot of questions, listen and do not be afraid to make mistakes, they are the best way to learn...I've made plenty!
